Posted on : Wednesday , 12th August 2015

The constructed Ngong wind power plant is to be commissioned in Kenya by Kengen in a bid to boost the renewable sources contributions to the national grid. It is hoped that the move will help in meeting the vision of generating 5,000MW of power by 2018. The construction of the wind power farm was expanded as a way of scaling up energy sources as the country looks to green energy.

Kengen CEO, Albert Mugo confirmed the reports and said that Ngong wind farm which was constructed in three phases near Nairobi, has been generating 5.5MW to the national grid.

However he exact date when the Ngong wind power plant is to be commissioned in Kenya was not revealed.

He further said that the construction of power projects like the Ngong wind power farm will help in the lowering of electricity prices in the country and assist in eliminating challenges of voltage fluctuations.

A feasibility analysis conducted by KenGen confirmed that the Ngong site was capable of generating up to 14.9GWh of energy per annum on average from a 5.1MW wind farm.

KenGen intends to increase its installed capacity for wind energy at the northern part of the Ngong Hills from the current 5.1MW to 25.5MW.

Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited, KenGen is the leading electric power generation company in Kenya, producing about 80 percent of electricity consumed in the country. The company utilizes various sources to generate electricity ranging from hydro, geothermal, thermal and wind.
